Lamine Yamal Condemns Racist Abuse Aimed at Egypt

Spain’s 0-0 draw against Egypt in Barcelona on Tuesday sparked backlash over xenophobic chants, with winger Lamine Yamal expressing his disapproval. The 18-year-old, who earned his 26th cap for the national team, highlighted the intolerance of such remarks during the friendly at RCDE Stadium. The game, originally scheduled in Qatar, was relocated due to Middle East tensions, adding context to the incidents.

“I know the chants were directed at the opposing team, but as a Muslim, it’s still disrespectful and intolerable,” Yamal wrote on Instagram. “Using religion as a taunt on the field makes you ignorant and racist. Football should be about enjoyment, not disrespecting people for who they are or their beliefs.”

Suspected Islamophobic and xenophobic comments during the first half prompted police to investigate. A warning message displayed on the stadium screen at halftime urged fans to avoid offensive remarks, which was repeated in the second half. Some sections of the crowd responded with whistles, drawing criticism from Spain’s leadership.

Spanish Football Federation Takes Stance

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) condemned the anti-Muslim chants, stating its commitment to eradicating racism in football. “Violent individuals exploit the sport to claim a space for themselves,” said coach Luis de la Fuente. “They must be identified and removed from society to ensure fairness in the game.”

De la Fuente, who made 10 adjustments from the previous 3-0 win over Serbia, noted that only Yamal retained his spot in the lineup. Egypt’s squad was missing Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah due to injury. The draw also contributed to Spain losing their top ranking in world football, as they prepare for their role as a co-host in the 2030 World Cup.
