Legendary manager Lucescu dies days after resigning

Legendary Manager Mircea Lucescu Passes Away Following Resignation

Mircea Lucescu, a revered figure in football, has died at the age of 80, just days after stepping down as head coach of Romania. His resignation came on Thursday, prompted by an illness that struck before a training session. Lucescu was hospitalized after experiencing a heart attack on Friday morning, according to reports.

The Romanian Football Federation issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over his passing, calling him “an absolute legend” who will forever be associated with the country’s footballing achievements. “Our sport loses not only a tactician of great skill but also a mentor, a visionary, and a national symbol who elevated the tricolour to global prominence,” the federation said.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mircea Lucescu, the winning manager of our UEFA Super Cup and 15 Turkish league titles. Rest in peace Luce, we will never forget you,” Galatasaray wrote on X.

“The entire Inter family mourns the passing of Mircea Lucescu and extends heartfelt condolences to his loved ones,” Inter Milan stated.

Lucescu’s coaching journey spanned decades, including stints at Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St Petersburg, Dynamo Kyiv, and Turkey. He first led Romania from 1981 to 1986, securing their debut in the European Championship in 1984. After a brief hiatus, he returned to helm the national team in 2024, though his final match—a 1-0 play-off loss to Turkey on 26 March—prevented qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

As a player, Lucescu earned 64 caps for Romania and captained the team during the 1970 World Cup. Romanian Football Federation president Razvan Burleanu reflected on his legacy, noting, “Mircea Lucescu was not merely a coach, but a life teacher for generations. His love for the game shaped our football, leaving an indelible mark.”
