MacIntyre could face more Masters wrath after gnome picture
MacIntyre Could Face Further Masters Scrutiny Following Gnome Controversy
Scot’s Instagram Post Sparks Debate Over Tournament’s Iconic Figurine
Robert MacIntyre, who became a professional golfer in 2017, has climbed to the eighth position in the global rankings. However, his recent actions at the Masters have raised fresh concerns for the Augusta National officials. The 29-year-old Scottish player failed to qualify for the halfway stage after posting scores of 80 and 71, leaving him seven strokes over par. He withdrew from the event in Augusta, where his conduct had already drawn criticism.
MacIntyre’s frustration during the tournament was captured on camera. In the opening round, he pointed a middle finger at the 15th green after a costly quadruple-bogey nine on the par-five hole. This occurred following a missed approach into the pond surrounding the putting surface. The Press Association reported that the Ryder Cup victor received a reprimand for the gesture. Known for their stringent rules, Masters organizers often address both players’ and patrons’ behavior with strict measures.
Shortly after his exit, MacIntyre shared an Instagram image of a gnome mimicking his likeness and displaying an extended middle finger. The post served as a clever dual reference to his on-course frustration and the ongoing discussion about the Masters’ iconic gnome. Introduced a decade ago, the small figurine has become a highly coveted sports collectible, with resale prices reportedly reaching up to 10 times its original £37 ($50) value. Its future now hangs in the balance, as speculation grows over its continued presence.
“Number one: The question is not trivial,” said Augusta chairman Fred Ridley on Wednesday. “Number two: I’ve been asking that question for several years and they won’t tell me the answer, so I can’t help you.”
MacIntyre’s earlier outbursts also included expressions of annoyance after a slightly off-target tee shot on the 12th hole and a misfired putt on the 13th. These moments, combined with the gnome image, have intensified scrutiny of his behavior. The debate surrounding the figurine highlights broader tensions about tradition versus change at the storied event.
