Man City have psychological edge over Arsenal – Rooney

Wayne Rooney Cites Psychological Advantage for Manchester City Against Arsenal

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has argued that Manchester City holds a psychological edge in the Premier League title race. He believes the team is better positioned to secure the crown, citing their experienced squad and Pep Guardiola’s tactical mastery. Arsenal, currently nine points ahead after playing two more games, face City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (16:30 BST).

Rooney’s Analysis of City’s Title Prospects

On The Wayne Rooney Show, he stated that City’s ability to win titles is a key factor. “They know how to win the title, and they have a manager who knows how to do it,” Rooney said. He added that City’s players are more composed, which gives them an advantage over Arsenal, who may struggle with pressure during a losing streak.

“They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance.”

Recent Match Outcomes Influence Title Race

City’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea came as Arsenal experienced a setback, losing 2-1 to Bournemouth in their latest match. Rooney suggested that the outcome of Sunday’s encounter could determine the league’s champion. “Whoever wins that title decider in Manchester will be favorites to take the league,” he claimed.

“Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring.”

Tottenham’s Relegation Struggles

Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, have fallen into the relegation zone following a defeat to Sunderland. West Ham’s win over Wolves further squeezed their position. Rooney described their performance as “a bit flat” in the north-east, which prevented them from capitalizing on De Zerbi’s first game in charge.

“Sometimes you get a bounce but I think you get that when a new manager comes in and you are front-footed and aggressive on the ball. I thought they were a bit in between.”

Rooney’s Warnings for Spurs

Rooney warned that relegation would be a major blow for Tottenham, urging them to find solutions quickly. “If they don’t get back in the Premier League in the first year, that will be an absolute nightmare for them,” he said. He also highlighted that some players might view a drop as an opportunity to move to a different club.

“It will be a disaster for them if they do go [down]. I think that’s where some of those players probably are looking at it thinking if they go down they can move on and go to a different club.”

Tottenham’s next fixture is a home match against Brighton on Saturday (17:30). Rooney emphasized the importance of securing a win to lift their spirits. “The longer it goes without winning is difficult for them,” he concluded.
