Rohl won’t watch title rivals as Rangers enjoy top spot
Rangers manager Danny Rohl celebrated his team’s rise to the summit of the Scottish Premiership, but he’s set on maintaining his focus on the game rather than keeping tabs on Sunday’s clashes between rival clubs. The 4-2 triumph against Dundee United at Ibrox secured the club’s first league-leading position in two years, a feat that came after overcoming a 13-point deficit to Hearts when Rohl took charge in October.
The victory highlighted a resurgence in Rangers’ attacking play, with four goals in a row at Ibrox showcasing improved threat. Rohl, however, remains cautious about the team’s consistency, acknowledging that the challenge ahead will only intensify. “We need to be stronger in possession,” he said, reflecting on recent defensive lapses. “But our quality shone through at 2-0 and 3-1—finding spaces and playing brave football. It’s frustrating when we let the opposition back into the game.”
A Nervy Victory
Rohl’s players demonstrated composure during the win, though some moments of hesitation were evident. Thelo Aasgaard, who had faced criticism this season, played a pivotal role in the attack, netting one of the four goals. Djeidi Gassama’s late impact and Ryan Naderi’s first Premiership goal added momentum, while the team’s defensive effort—despite conceding two goals—helped them claim three points.
“I will do the same as the last matchday,” Rohl explained. “No live score updates, no phone alerts. Last time, my assistant coach reminded me about Celtic’s loss to Dundee United, and I said ‘what happened?’ He replied ‘great result.’ I’ll follow the same routine and hope it continues for three matches in a row.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the progress, Rohl emphasized the need for improvement. With left-back Tuur Rommens sidelined for the next two games, Jayden Meghoma made his first defensive appearance since February and struggled. John Souttar’s return to the starting XI was also met with mixed results as he was caught offside by United’s quick counterattacks.
Rangers’ dominance is currently based on goal difference, and a slip-up from Hearts in their game against Livingston could cost them the top spot. “We had nine ‘finals’ this season,” Rohl noted, “and winning the first three gives us confidence. But we must stay humble—nothing is guaranteed yet.”
With the focus now on building on this success, the manager remains optimistic about his squad’s potential. “If we win six games, we have a chance to secure the league,” he said. “But the path isn’t easy, and the next challenge away to Falkirk will test everything we’ve worked for.”
