Sinner beats Alcaraz to return to world top spot
Jannik Sinner reclaimed the world number one ranking after a hard-fought Monte Carlo Masters final triumph over Carlos Alcaraz. The 24-year-old Italian secured a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory in the Monaco final, marking his first meeting with the reigning champion since his straight-sets win at the ATP Championship in November. This win also added to his growing tally of Masters 1000 titles, bringing his count to three this year after victories in Indian Wells and Miami.
Tough Conditions and Unforced Errors
The match was marked by challenging winds and intense rallies, as both players struggled to adapt. The unpredictable weather contributed to a total of 83 unforced errors between them. Sinner, however, managed to turn the tide in the tie-break by improving his first-serve accuracy, while Alcaraz’s double fault during a critical moment gave the Italian the upper hand.
“It has been an interesting week trying to learn how to play again on clay,” Sinner reflected. “I came here trying to get as many matches as possible and I’m happy to win one big tournament on this surface. Having this trophy and getting back to number one means a lot to me. Today was a very high level from both of us. It was a bit breezy and different conditions to what we had played in this week.”
Neither player could fully dominate early on, as both faced difficulties holding serve. After exchanging breaks, the tie-break became a pivotal turning point, with Sinner capitalizing on Alcaraz’s errors. In the second set, Sinner began slowly, falling behind in his service game before rallying to stay in contention. Alcaraz briefly took a 3-1 lead, but the Italian’s resilience kept the pressure on the 22-year-old Spaniard, who had previously won 10 of their 16 matches.
Sinner’s consistency shone through as he converted a key break point following an unsteady service game by Alcaraz. This sealed his 27th ATP Tour victory, extending his winning streak in Masters series events to 22 matches. Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, Mirra Andreeva staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3 in the Linz Open. The 18-year-old former French Open semi-finalist claimed her fifth WTA Tour title, overcoming Potapova’s strong start after switching allegiance from Russia to Austria in December.
