Sinner into last eight after 37-set record snapped

Jannik Sinner’s 37-match set-winning streak was broken in the Monte Carlo Masters as he lost the second set to Tomas Machac, marking his first setback at ATP Masters events in 186 days. The Italian, who has claimed three Masters 1000 titles on clay in Paris, Indian Wells, and Miami without surrendering a single set, regrouped to clinch a 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 victory against the Czech player. This win extends his current run of 19 straight Masters tournament triumphs.

Though Sinner has yet to secure a clay-court Masters 1000 title, his performance sets up a potential clash with Canadian sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals. A victory here would see him overtake Carlos Alcaraz for the world number one ranking when the ATP updates standings on Monday. The Spanish star, who has not defended his title yet, overcame a second-set struggle to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. After a strong opening set, Alcaraz faced 23 unforced errors but rallied with 13 winners in the final set to advance against eighth seed Alexander Bublik.

“I’m very sad to say that I won’t be able to play the Porsche Tennis Gran Prix this year,” Aryna Sabalenka shared on Instagram. “Unfortunately I suffered an injury after Miami, and even though I tried everything to recover in time, I’m not ready to compete.”

The women’s world number one withdrew from the Stuttgart Open, ending her streak of consecutive appearances. She had previously achieved the ‘Sunshine Double’ by winning titles in Indian Wells and Miami. Her absence will be filled by Magdalena Frech, who will represent Poland at the tournament starting on Monday. Live scores, results, and order of play updates are available for real-time tracking.
