Six Big Questions for Fury’s Fifth Return from Retirement
After a 12-month absence, Tyson Fury makes his comeback this weekend against Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 37-year-old Briton, who has compiled a record of 34 victories, two losses, and one draw since turning pro in 2008, stepped down following a consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024. Despite his prior exits from the ring, many believed his retirement was temporary. Now, with another break, the boxing community is left wondering about his enduring capabilities.
A Challenger with Potential
Makhmudov, a 36-year-old Russian with 21 wins, including 19 stoppage victories, enters the bout as a formidable opponent. He recently defeated Dave Allen by unanimous decision but faces a daunting task against Fury. Analysts and fighters alike are weighing his readiness to challenge the Gypsy King once more.
“Makhmudov is a well-chosen rival for multiple reasons. His presence and attitude align with a powerful, aggressive Russian style, which complements Fury’s strengths,” remarked Fabio Wardley.
“Every heavyweight bout is a high-stakes affair. It only takes one moment of brilliance. But Tyson’s class and experience should allow him to manage the challenge,” added Natasha Jonas.
“Makhmudov brings a unique threat to Fury’s game. His recent win over Allen suggests he has the momentum to disrupt the champion’s rhythm,” noted Steve Bunce.
“Stylistically, Makhmudov fits Fury’s tactical approach. His direct offense could be countered by Fury’s boxing acumen,” explained Joe Gallagher.
Can Fury Regain World Championship Glory?
Fury’s previous world title reigns, which included victories over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and Deontay Wilder in 2020, have left a legacy of dominance. However, the current landscape of heavyweight boxing raises questions about his ability to reclaim the crown.
“In today’s division, Fury would need to face either me or Usyk to win a title again. I don’t think he’s ready to beat either of us right now,” said Fabio Wardley.
“The path to a title is uncertain. If Usyk vacates a belt, Fury could capitalize on the opportunity, but it all hinges on the sanctioning bodies’ decisions,” commented Steve Bunce.
“The competition is fierce. Fury has the tools to become a three-time champion again, especially if the titles become available,” noted Joe Gallagher.
The Unfulfilled Super-Fight
A potential clash between Fury and Anthony Joshua has been discussed for years but remains unactualized. The duo’s rivalry, now in its fifth chapter, hinges on the timing and availability of both fighters.
“There will always be interest in a Fury vs. Joshua matchup. Even at 50, the excitement would remain high if they finally step into the ring,” Fabio Wardley asserted.
“While I’m not sure Fury can overcome Usyk in a rematch, the trilogy fight would be a defining moment for his career,” Natasha Jonas shared.
“Usyk’s performance in the first two bouts makes him the clear favorite. But Fury’s resilience and hunger could change the narrative,” concluded Joe Gallagher.
