Wales captain and ex-Arsenal star Ramsey retires
Wales’ Iconic Captain, Aaron Ramsey, Has Officially Announced His Retirement
Aaron Ramsey, the 35-year-old former Arsenal midfielder and Wales captain, has retired from professional football with immediate effect. After a prolonged period without a club since departing from Pumas UNAM in Mexico, he is now set to transition into coaching. His career, marked by significant contributions to Welsh football, comes to an end as one of the nation’s most celebrated players.
Ramsey’s legacy includes 21 goals in 86 caps, alongside participation in three major international tournaments. He played a pivotal role in Wales’ unprecedented Euro 2016 semi-final run, which earned him a spot in UEFA’s team of the tournament. Later, he competed at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, where Wales made their first appearance in the finals stage in 64 years. His skillful playmaking was a cornerstone of these historic campaigns.
The midfielder began his journey at Cardiff City before joining Arsenal in 2008, where he spent 11 years. During his tenure, he claimed three FA Cups, netting the decisive goal in two finals. He also had stints at Juventus, Nice, and a loan spell at Rangers, where his team reached the Europa League final in 2022. Ramsey’s second return to Cardiff saw him briefly serve as interim head coach after the previous season.
“After much thought, I’ve chosen to end my playing career. First, I’d like to express my gratitude to Wales. Wearing the Welsh jersey has been a privilege, and the support from coaches and staff made those moments possible,” he shared.
“To the Red Wall, you’ve stood by us through every challenge. Your loyalty during victories and setbacks has been vital to our journey. I’ll always be grateful for that partnership. Diolch.
“I’m also thankful to the clubs I’ve played for and the individuals who helped me achieve my dream. And to my family—without their unwavering support, none of this would have been achievable,” he added.
Ramsey had hoped to stay fit for Wales’ World Cup play-offs this summer, but without a new club, he decided to step away. The video can not be played. Have we seen the last of Wales’ former star and Arsenal legend?
