Finnish police say stray Ukrainian drone carried warhead

Finnish Police Confirm Stray Ukrainian Drone Carried Warhead

Finnish authorities are examining two drones that crashed in the southern region of the country. The incident has prompted Kyiv to issue an apology, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserting he and Finland’s Alexander Stubb share a unified stance. A drone believed to be Ukrainian was discovered with an unexploded warhead, according to a statement by Finnish police on Monday.

The drone descended near Kouvola, a town approximately 100 kilometers west of Finland’s border with Russia. This border, the longest between Russia and the European Union, as well as the NATO alliance, holds strategic importance for Helsinki, which joined NATO in April 2023. The crash occurred on Sunday, with no injuries or structural damage reported.

The police identified the device as a Ukrainian AN196 drone, which was neutralized through a controlled explosion. Debris from a second drone was uncovered in Luumaki, a village east of Kouvola, and officials linked its appearance to the events. They are pursuing two charges: “grossly negligent endangerment” and “territorial violation” related to the incidents.

“The UAV that landed north of Kouvola was found to have an unexploded warhead,” stated Finnish police. “We are confident the cause was interference from Russian electronic warfare systems. We have already extended our apology to Finland for this occurrence,” added Georgiy Tykhy, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

Zelenskyy emphasized his coordination with Stubb, sharing that they “see the situation in the same way” and “exchange all necessary information.” The Finnish border guard continues its review of the event, while the police focus on determining the extent of the risk posed by the stray drone.
