Dozens missing after migrant boat capsizes in Mediterranean

A vessel set sail from Libya, transporting over 100 individuals. The craft overturned in the Mediterranean Sea, leaving 32 survivors and two confirmed fatalities, with dozens still unaccounted for, according to advocacy groups. The incident occurred in a search-and-rescue area designated for Libyan authorities, yet the rescue efforts were spearheaded by international actors.

Footage captured approximately 15 passengers clinging to the boat’s hull as it drifted in open waters. Merchant ships assisted in recovering the survivors, who were then brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa, a critical gateway for migrants entering Europe. German NGO Sea-Watch tracked the event from above, aiding coordination of the rescue operation.

“Tragic Easter shipwreck. 32 survivors, two bodies recovered and more than 70 people missing,” wrote Italian rescue coordinator Mediterranea Saving Humans on X. The group attributed the disaster to European policies that block safe, legal migration routes for asylum seekers.

As of early 2026, the UN’s International Organization for Migration reported that at least 683 migrants have perished or disappeared in Mediterranean crossings. This incident underscores the ongoing risks faced by those attempting the perilous journey, highlighting the need for improved maritime safety measures and policy reforms.
