India News: Jet Fuel Prices Reach Record High Amid Iran War
Government Steps In to Alleviate Fuel Price Pressure
India’s authorities have implemented measures to curb the effects of soaring jet fuel costs on airlines and ticket prices. Commercial LPG cylinders have also seen a notable price surge, according to local media.
Airlines Acknowledge Government Support
Indian carriers expressed gratitude for the government’s decision to manage the fuel price rise. IndiGo, the nation’s leading airline by market share and flight count, highlighted the move as providing “greater stability” and enabling more economical domestic travel.
“We would like to thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister for this crucial step, and extend our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas,” the airline stated on X.
Ajay Singh, head of SpiceJet, a budget carrier, also praised the ministers’ actions. “Their swift response will significantly aid airlines in handling the current global challenges, including disrupted supply chains and fluctuating fuel markets,” he added in a statement.
Price Increases and Market Dynamics
Public sector oil firms have raised aviation turbine fuel prices by over 100%, with New Delhi’s rates hitting Rs 207,341.22 ($2,212 or €1,911) per kiloliter. This marks the first time domestic jet fuel costs have surpassed the Rs 200,000 threshold in India.
The prior peak was recorded at approximately Rs 110,000 during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. International flight fuel costs also rose by 107%, compounding the financial strain on airlines.
Reasons Behind the Hike
Experts attribute the price surge to disruptions in the Middle East’s energy supply chain and the Indian rupee’s 14-year low performance. Monthly fuel price revisions by state-owned companies have intensified the situation, with the latest adjustments impacting both domestic and international routes.
Previously, airlines introduced a fuel surcharge in March to offset rising crude oil prices following the US-Israel conflict in Iran. This surcharge might be adjusted soon as fuel costs continue to climb.
Price Caps Suspended Amid Crisis
Normally, India’s aviation ministry enforces a cap on domestic air fares to keep them affordable. However, due to the ongoing Middle East tensions, the ministry temporarily lifted this ceiling, allowing airlines to adjust ticket prices as needed.
The ministry clarified that only a partial 25% increase—equivalent to Rs 15 per liter—was passed to carriers, aiming to shield travel costs from the sharp international price rise.
