Iran threatens new hostilities as Israel pounds Lebanon

The two-week truce between the US, Israel and Iran has started showing cracks as the sides disagreed on the inclusion on Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement. Welcome to DW's coverage of the US-Israel war with Iran and the wider conflicts in the Middle East on Thursday, April 9: Following Israeli strikes in Lebanon that killed at least 182 people and wounded some 900 others, Iran has threatened to resume hostilities. The US, Israel and Iran are disputing the extension of the ceasefire deal to Lebanon.

A senior US official has said Iran's 10-point plan was not the same set of conditions the White House had agreed to in order to pause the war. "If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart…over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them, and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that's ultimately their choice," US Vice President JD Vance added. Meanwhile, Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf appeared to threaten the ceasefire, posting on X that the "workable basis on which to negotiate" had already been violated, making further talks "unreasonable." Ghalibaf has listed three alleged US violations of the truce plan: the continued attacks in Lebanon, a drone entering Iranian airspace, and a denial of the country's right to enrichment.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would "fulfil our duty and deliver a response" if Israel did not cease its strikes. The Hezbollah militant group said it had a "right" to respond to Israeli strikes. The delicate two-week-long ceasefire between Iran and the US entered its second day while Israel continues to bombard Lebanon.

World leaders welcomed the ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has closed the shipping route again following attacks on Lebanon. The US and Israel have asserted that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon.

Iran, however, said the attacks by Israel in Lebanon violate the ceasefire agreement. US Vice President JD Vance has said Iran's understanding of Lebanon's inclusion in the truce agreement was the result of a "misunderstanding."
