Powerful Earthquake Strikes Molucca Sea Near Indonesia
A significant 7.4-magnitude tremor hit eastern Indonesia, causing concerns over potential tsunami threats. Initial alerts were issued, but the warning has since been rescinded. The quake occurred in the Northern Molucca Sea, off the coast of Ternate, Indonesia, early Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Epicenter and Depth
The seismic event was centered approximately 127 kilometers west of Ternate, with a depth of around 35 kilometers. USGS data also highlighted aftershocks measuring up to 5.0 on the Richter scale, adding to the region’s instability.
Tsunami Observations
Indonesia’s meteorology agency, BMKG, recorded minor tsunami waves in North Maluku province—measuring 30 centimeters—and in Bitung, northeastern Sulawesi, at 20 centimeters. These measurements were below the threshold for major coastal impacts.
Local Impact
Indonesian broadcaster Metro TV reported one fatality in the Manado area, attributed to collapsing structures. Footage showed buildings sustaining damage, though no widespread destruction was observed.
Geological Context
Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic zone notorious for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This region’s geological activity often leads to sudden seismic events, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to such disasters.
