UK denies Kanye West entry, music festival cancelled
The UK government has blocked entry for US rapper Ye, previously known as Kanye West, citing his antisemitic remarks. This decision prompted the cancellation of the Wireless Festival, where he was set to perform as headliner. Festival Republic, the event’s organizers, announced the move on Instagram, stating that the Home Office’s ban forced them to withdraw the planned July lineup.
Refunds are being issued to ticket holders for the three-day, outdoor event in London’s Finsbury Park. The Home Office argued that Ye’s presence would not align with the public good, a stance echoed by UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who criticized the festival’s defense of Ye as “absurd.” The PM, Keir Starmer, had earlier labeled his booking “deeply concerning.”
“As a result of the Home Office banning Ye from entering the United Kingdom, Wireless Festival has been forced to cancel,” stated organizers.
Ye’s controversial actions include last year’s release of “Heil Hitler,” a track praising Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, and promoting swastika-themed apparel on his website. In January, he issued a public apology, attributing his behavior to mental health struggles. However, his apology did not sway the UK’s stance, as Jewish community leaders remained skeptical.
Sponsors Pepsi, Rockstar Energy, and Diageo pulled their support following the festival’s invitation to Ye. Festival Republic defended the decision, expressing backing for the artist and advocating for forgiveness. Board of Deputies of British Jews President Phil Rosenberg emphasized that the Jewish community would await clear evidence of remorse before endorsing his return to the stage.
Before the ban, Ye sought to engage with UK Jewish leaders, aiming to demonstrate his commitment through actions. Despite this, the backlash continued, with officials and community representatives united in their criticism of his antisemitic rhetoric.
