World’s Oldest Gorilla Celebrates 69th Birthday at Berlin Zoo

At the Berlin Zoo, a remarkable milestone was reached as Lady Fatou, affectionately dubbed the “grand dame,” turned 69. This year’s celebration marks her continued status as the globe’s oldest living gorilla, a title she has held since being recognized by Guinness World Records in 2023. Her age is a testament to the zoo’s dedication to her well-being, ensuring she remains a vibrant presence despite her decades of life.

From West Africa to Berlin

Born in the West African region during 1957, Lady Fatou arrived in Europe in 1959 as part of a French sailor’s belongings. The sailor, reportedly unable to settle his tavern tab, gifted the gorilla to the landlady as repayment. From there, she was transported to the German capital, where she has since become a beloved figure among visitors and staff alike.

A Legacy of Generations

As a western lowland gorilla, Fatou’s longevity far exceeds the typical lifespan of her species. In the wild, these primates rarely surpass their 40th year, while in captivity, reaching 50 is considered remarkable. Her impact on the zoo’s history is profound, as she gave birth to Dufte in 1974—the first gorilla born at the facility. Though her daughter passed away in 2001, Fatou still shares her enclosure with her granddaughter, M’penzi, and has at least three great-great-great grandchildren as of 2026.

“We are very proud to have been able to accommodate an animal with us now for more than half a century. We are pleased that Fatou is in such good health despite her age,” remarked zoo director Andreas Knieriem on a prior occasion.

Today, Lady Fatou enjoys a private enclosure tailored to her needs, with dedicated staff attending to her daily care. While she often prefers to observe the younger gorillas from a distance, her presence remains a source of inspiration and wonder for all who visit the zoo. Her story underscores the unique bond between humans and wildlife, highlighting the importance of conservation and care in extending the lives of such majestic creatures.
