Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group

Seven Detained at Base Protest for Alleged Support of Banned Organization

During a peace demonstration at an RAF facility, seven individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of endorsing the proscribed group Palestine Action. The arrests occurred outside the main entrance of Lakenheath airbase on Sunday, as reported by Suffolk Police. The protest was linked to media reports indicating a US fighter jet, which had been downed in Iran on Friday, was stationed at the base.

“They have been held on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” said a Suffolk Police spokesperson. “These individuals were brought to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry.” The statement added, “Suffolk Police remains committed to enforcing the law impartially, taking action when offences are suspected.”

The High Court recently declared the proscription of Palestine Action as unlawful in February. However, it permitted the Home Office to challenge the ruling, keeping the ban active until the appeal’s resolution. The recent protests were part of a six-day peace camp, including a continuous vigil, set to conclude on Monday.

Suffolk Police noted that the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the demonstrators. Separately, two individuals were charged with obstructing the highway after setting up a blockade at the base on Saturday. For more stories from Suffolk, reach out via the provided contact links.
