Burnham Set to Become Next PM After 322 Labour MPs Back Him

The former Greater Manchester mayor secured nominations from 322 Labour MPs in the first round of voting, positioning him as the clear favourite to lead the party. This strong showing places Burnham just one vote short of the 323 threshold that would guarantee him an uncontested leadership victory. The nomination process began on Thursday, with many MPs indicating they would support Burnham once they returned to Westminster.
Burnham’s Rapid Rise to Leadership
If no other candidates emerge to challenge him, Burnham is expected to be formally announced as Labour leader within days. This would set the stage for him to assume the role of prime minister on July 20, marking a remarkable political journey for someone who only recently won a parliamentary seat through the Makerfield by-election. In his statement of thanks, Burnham expressed appreciation for the cross-party support he received. He highlighted that the backing came from across Labour’s ideological spectrum and reflected what he called a shared belief that Britain needs a new political direction.
“That is the circuit breaker I am offering: power out of Westminster, an economy rewired for ordinary people, and good growth in every postcode,” Burnham declared.
Humour and Politics Meet in Clacton
Burnham also used Thursday to engage in good-natured banter about Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s decision to trigger a by-election in Clacton, Burnham’s own constituency. Farage plans to stand again in the contest, which is being boycotted by the Labour Party and other major political groups. Comedian Count Binface has entered as a candidate in the race. Speaking at the Silver Clef music awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where Burnham presented the Legend Award to the Manchester indie band James, he shared a light-hearted message.
“Except to say this, ‘Count Binface, you are carrying the hopes of the nation. Don’t let us down,'” Burnham remarked to applause.
Pressure Mounts for Leadership Change
Burnham’s by-election victory came amid growing calls for Sir Keir Starmer to step down following Labour’s heavy defeats in May’s local elections. The former leader resigned on the same day Burnham was officially sworn in as an MP, acknowledging that he had received clear signals about his future. The deadline for candidates to secure the required 81 MP nominations is next Wednesday. In addition to parliamentary support, Burnham must also gain backing from at least three of the 31 affiliated socialist societies and trade unions, a requirement expected to be easily met.
Preparing for an Uncontested Victory
A path to becoming Labour leader without a contest would allow Burnham to skip the traditional summer vote among party members and trade union supporters. Dozens of MPs had already announced their support through social media, including Burnham himself, who joked this might be his “third time lucky” after unsuccessful leadership bids in 2010 and 2015. The prospect of an uncontested leadership became clearer on Wednesday when former defence minister Al Carns withdrew from the race. Some Labour members are now urging Burnham to outline his policy plans before taking office. Having left Westminster in 2017, Burnham has had limited time to connect with newer Labour MPs who now form the majority of the party’s parliamentary group. He will be the only candidate in an official parliamentary hustings on Monday, where he will answer questions from fellow MPs about his vision for the country. Meanwhile, discussions with civil servants about his policy agenda continue under the guidance of Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo.
