US Secret Service investigates reports of gunfire near White House

US Secret Service Probes Gunfire Near White House

Gunfire was reported near the White House on Sunday morning, prompting the US Secret Service to initiate an investigation. Security personnel were dispatched to the area surrounding Lafayette Park, located just north of the presidential residence, shortly after midnight local time (04:00 GMT). The agency confirmed that a search of the park and nearby zones was conducted.

No suspect was found, and no injuries were documented during the incident, according to the Secret Service. The agency, in collaboration with other partners, is actively seeking a potential vehicle and a person of interest. Despite the disruption, operations at the White House remained uninterrupted, though a heightened security level was implemented.

“Roads in the area were temporarily closed but have since been reopened,” stated Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi in a post on X.

President Donald Trump stayed in Washington DC for the weekend, rather than traveling to his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida, where he typically spends time off. White House communications director Steven Cheung shared on X that Trump “has been working nonstop in the White House and Oval Office” during this Easter period.

Trump is scheduled to host a family Easter dinner at the White House on Sunday, as reported by CBS News. The White House did not provide a comment to the BBC regarding the incident.
