Counter-terror team join car incident inquiry
Counter-Terror Unit Assists in City Centre Car Collision Probe
Derbyshire Police are still interrogating a male suspect arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a vehicle incident that injured seven individuals in the city center. The collision occurred at approximately 21:30 GMT on Saturday when a black Suzuki Swift struck pedestrians in Friar Gate. Counter-terrorism officers have joined the inquiry, though the local force noted this is “standard procedure for events of this scale” and investigators remain open to various possible motivations.
Suspect’s Background and Charges
The accused, a 36-year-old man from Derby with Indian roots, has been detained under multiple counts, including causing serious injury through dangerous driving, grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving. Despite the involvement of counter-terrorism teams, authorities have stated the incident is not yet classified as a terrorist act, and there is no current threat to the public.
“It was a horrifying event that has deeply unsettled the city,” said Ch Supt Emma Aldred at a press conference. “Officers arrived on the scene mere seconds after the collision and arrested the suspect seven minutes later on a bridge leading to Pride Park.”
Witness accounts highlight the swift action taken by emergency services. Aldred credited eyewitnesses for alerting police, enabling the quick response. CCTV footage from a nearby takeaway captured the incident and its immediate aftermath, with business owners assisting the injured. The public’s aid, including first aid efforts, was also acknowledged by officials.
Location and Timeline
Following the collision, Friar Gate was closed from Curzon Street/Cheapside to Ford Street, reopening around 15:00 BST on Sunday. The scene remained eerily quiet on Sunday, with police tape and officers stationed around the area. However, the bustling atmosphere on Saturday night, filled with students and restaurants, contrasted sharply with the calm on Sunday.
“I came down with my son and saw a major crash,” recounted Mark Lucas, a nearby resident. “People were sprawled on the road, and I didn’t realise the car had run over pedestrians until later.”
“I didn’t witness the crash directly,” said Eren Celebi, a shop worker. “I was busy with customers when I heard screaming and shouting outside. When I checked, people were running around and calling for an ambulance.”
Forensic teams are currently examining debris, including scattered clothing and shoes, along Friar Gate. Detectives have requested footage of the incident, focusing on the car’s path before and after the collision. The vehicle is believed to have traveled toward Ashbourne Road, Bridge Street, Lodge Lane, Five Lamps, Garden Street, and Duffield Road before heading to St Alkmund’s Way.
Public Reaction and Context
Catherine Atkinson, the Labour MP for Derby North, visited the site and shared: “Like many others, I’m still in shock. You don’t expect something like this to happen in our city. Everyone is utterly stunned by the events.”
Derby, though a city, often feels like a close-knit town due to its community vibe. The incident has left locals grappling with disbelief, as the area is typically lively and safe. Police confirmed that vehicles in the affected zone could not be moved until the cordon was lifted and the road fully reopened.
