Pope Leo XIV: Not Afraid of Trump Administration

Anti-War Messages and Papal Role

The Pope emphasized that his growing criticism of war is not aimed at any individual leader. During a recent flight to Algiers for a four-day visit to Africa, he clarified: “My words are not meant to target anyone personally,” adding that he remains focused on promoting peace and unity rather than political agendas.

Criticism from Trump Administration

When questioned about remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his stance on the conflict between Iran and Israel, the Pope asserted he had “no fear of the Trump administration.” He noted that Trump and his allies had used Christian principles to support military actions, but his own message centers on peace.

Sermon at Palm Sunday Mass

At a Palm Sunday service on March 29, he delivered a sermon without naming specific figures, stating: “This is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war. No one can claim Him as a justification for conflict.” He further highlighted that war advocates would be ignored by God, quoting: “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.”

Recent Comments and Presidential Response

Earlier this week, the Pope more directly addressed the U.S.-led military campaign against Iran, condemning its “horror and inhumanity” and urging leaders to prioritize dialogue. He called out the “idolatry of self and money” and the “display of power,” declaring: “Enough of war!” This statement appeared to provoke Trump’s latest critique on his social platform, where he labeled the Pope as “terrible” at foreign policy.

Trump’s Reaction on Truth Social

Trump claimed the Pope was “not doing a very good job” and accused him of being “very liberal,” suggesting he was elected as the first American pope specifically to counter the president. Despite the backlash, the Pope remained composed, stating to reporters on the plane: “I will not retreat from sharing the gospel’s message. It is clear: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.'”
