Chalamet thanked by Royal Ballet and Opera boss for boosting ticket sales
Royal Ballet and Opera Director Acknowledges Chalamet’s Impact on Sales
The Royal Ballet and Opera’s director, Alex Beard, shared with The Times that Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet’s recent remarks had unexpectedly revitalized interest in the London-based institution. Following his controversial comments about ballet and opera, which suggested the art forms were no longer relevant, Beard highlighted the surge in public engagement and ticket purchases.
Controversial Remarks Spark Public Engagement
Chalamet’s statement in February, during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas, questioned the contemporary appeal of ballet and opera. “No one cares about this anymore,” he said, referring to efforts to sustain these art forms. Despite the backlash, Beard praised the actor’s honesty, noting the RBO’s approach was intentionally approachable.
“We simply said, ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate’—for example, our youngest audience is aged 20 to 30,” Beard remarked. “And you know what? Our post got two-and-a-half million engagements and half a million shares, just on Instagram.”
The actor’s comments also led to a creative response from the Seattle Opera. The company leveraged his remarks as a marketing strategy, offering a discount promotion for an upcoming Carmen performance with the code “TIMOTHEE.” The promo tag even invited Chalamet to use it, acknowledging his role in generating buzz.
Dynamic Pricing Defended Amid Criticism
In the same interview, Beard addressed recent changes to pricing strategies. “What we do isn’t full-on dynamic pricing,” he clarified. “Prices remain steady during the priority-booking phase and initial weeks of public sales. There’s a cap on how high top-tier tickets can go.” He argued that adjusting upper prices could help stabilize lower ones, ensuring accessibility for all audiences.
“It’s a long way from the full Oasis experience,” Beard added, referencing the dramatic price fluctuations critics had previously associated with dynamic pricing.
While some in the performing arts community criticized Chalamet’s remarks, the RBO viewed them as a catalyst for renewed conversation. Beard concluded with gratitude, expressing appreciation for the actor’s influence in drawing attention to their work.
