Lib Dems vow to stop Welsh government spending money on independence

Manifesto Commitments

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to prevent the next Welsh government from using public funds to investigate independence. Their election manifesto for the Senedd emphasizes that taxpayer money should serve the interests of Welsh residents rather than pursuing separation from the UK.

Public funds must be directed toward meeting the needs of the people of Wales, not toward advancing a move away from the United Kingdom, the party stated in its manifesto.

Key proposals include potential adjustments to income tax to support social care, 30 hours of free childcare for children aged nine months to four years, and a ban on raw sewage dumping.

Political Landscape

To form the next government, coalitions are likely necessary. Current polls suggest Plaid Cymru and Reform UK are in a close race for leadership, with Plaid Cymru having committed to establishing an independence commission.

Plaid Cymru and the Greens both advocate for Welsh independence, but neither has announced plans to hold a referendum during the current Senedd term, which concludes in 2030.

Plaid Cymru has outlined a national commission costing around £500,000, designed to lay the groundwork for future independence strategies.

Campaign Focus and Seat Prospects

During an event in Cardiff, Dodds addressed unionist voters who have grown disenchanted with Labour and are hesitant to back pro-independence parties.

The Liberal Democrats believe they can secure up to five seats, a stark contrast to their 2021 election outcome, where only Dodds was elected, earning a solitary seat for the party.
