Cashier stole from vulnerable customers to fund trips to Paris, Tuscany and Dubai

Kelly Kershaw, a 54-year-old cashier at the Caernarfon Nationwide Building Society branch, was exposed after coworkers noticed her social media posts showcasing lavish travel experiences. Among the destinations highlighted were a safari in Africa, as well as excursions to Paris, Tuscany, and Dubai. Her online profile, which described her as “living and loving life one adventure at a time,” featured images of her skiing, sailing, and enjoying international getaways.

During 2023 and 2024, Kershaw allegedly embezzled funds from some of the most vulnerable clients, including a stroke victim and a man with learning difficulties. The internal probe began in October 2024 after suspicions arose that she had forged customer signatures to authorize unauthorized cash withdrawals. Despite her monthly take-home pay of £1,400, Kershaw claimed to have a “compulsive shopping addiction” and spent money on beggars and household expenses.

“It was noted by members of staff she was having numerous expensive holidays and appeared to be living beyond her means,” said Huw Evans, the prosecutor. The offense led to five fraud charges, with £8,630 in compensation sought. However, Nationwide had already reimbursed the victims, as revealed in court. Kershaw’s Facebook page also displayed a BMW convertible with a custom license plate, underscoring the extent of her financial indulgence.

Michael Strain, her defense attorney, argued that she had relocated to a tightly-knit community to begin anew and later developed an illness. “She genuinely doesn’t know what caused her to behave in this way,” Strain explained, expressing remorse. “She’s lost her job, good name, and reputation for honesty,” he added. The probation service labeled the actions as “despicable,” and Kershaw remains on bail pending her sentencing on 8 May.
