Trump to participate in marathon Bible reading
Trump Engages in Extended Bible Reading Event
As part of a week-long initiative organized by Christian conservatives, US President Donald Trump will take part in an extended Bible reading session at the Museum of the Bible in Washington. The event, titled “America Reads the Bible,” coincides with the 250th anniversary of US independence and aims to highlight the nation’s spiritual roots. Trump’s reading of a passage from 2 Chronicles is set for Tuesday night, a text frequently referenced by proponents of religious influence in governance.
Controversy and Context
The session occurs amid Trump’s recent discord with Pope Leo XIV, who has criticized the US for its military actions in Iran. Trump’s involvement in the event is also notable following backlash from some religious allies over an AI-generated image portraying him as a Jesus-like figure. The image, which he initially shared, was later removed as he clarified it was meant to depict him as a doctor. He later posted a second AI image, showcasing Jesus embracing Trump with a caption expressing approval.
“Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political gain,” remarked Pope Leo XIV during his visit to Cameroon. This statement came a day before Trump asserted his right to disagree with the Pope.
The initiative includes contributions from various public figures, such as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who are sharing Bible passages during the event. While the US Constitution prohibits the government from endorsing a national religion, the Trump administration has actively supported the idea of Christianity as foundational to the nation’s identity. Hegseth, for instance, frequently incorporates scriptural references into his public communications and leads departmental prayers.
Trump’s chosen passage emphasizes repentance and divine blessing, stating: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” The reading was taped in the Oval Office earlier, according to event organizers, who hope it inspires a renewed connection to the spiritual values they believe underpin American society.
