Furious Rosenior questions Chelsea’s desire
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior voiced his discontent after a 3-0 loss to Brighton, which saw his team face intense criticism from their own fans. The match at Amex Stadium highlighted a lackluster display, with the visitors struggling to create chances until the 40th minute and ultimately succumbing to a daunting deficit.
Rosenior described the performance as “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” emphasizing the team’s failure to meet expectations. Defenders were repeatedly caught off guard, and the squad’s defensive errors contributed to the mounting frustration. This marks the club’s fifth consecutive match without a goal, the longest such streak since 1912.
The game unfolded in front of influential club figures, including co-owner Behdad Eghbali and the sporting directors, at a venue tied to Rosenior’s early coaching career. The setting added weight to his critique, as the team’s current struggles contrast sharply with past successes.
“It was unacceptable in every aspect of the game, unacceptable in our attitude,” Rosenior said. “I keep coming out and defending the players, but that’s indefensible. The way we conceded goals, the duels we lost, and the lack of intensity were all glaring issues. Something needs to change drastically right now.”
“I think the players need to reflect on their efforts tonight,” he added. “Tactics come after the basics—having courage, winning headers, tackles, and avoiding costly mistakes. That performance doesn’t represent this football club or the standards I expect. I feel numb from the anger, but the message is clear: we must improve.”
With seven points behind fifth-place Liverpool, Chelsea’s Champions League aspirations appear at risk. The coach acknowledged a potential disconnect between himself and the players, citing a lack of spirit and belief. “We’re giving everything to the players, but the current attitude is lacking,” he said. “Maybe three or four of the 11 showed determination, but that’s not enough for this club.”
Rosenior stressed that the loss was not due to tactical flaws but a failure in desire and courage. “Whether you’re at this elite level or any other, to be accused of giving up is unacceptable,” he declared. “We need to make decisive choices for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds and turn things around.”
