Navy investigated links between nuclear sub commander and MP

Last year, a high-ranking naval officer was scrutinized over claims of an improper relationship with Scottish MP Joani Reid, BBC News has learned. Reid resigned from the Labour Party last month after her husband was detained on suspicion of providing intelligence to China. At the time, she asserted that she was not under police investigation and had done nothing wrong.

The officer, who led a nuclear-powered submarine stationed at Faslane, was not subjected to disciplinary measures following the allegations. No violations of military protocols were confirmed. Security reviews were also conducted, and the Ministry of Defence reportedly found no cause for concern. The officer has since stepped down from command but continues to serve in the Navy.

Faslane Naval Base

The Faslane facility, located on the Gare Loch approximately 25 miles northwest of Glasgow, serves as the headquarters for all Royal Navy nuclear submarines. It hosts the UK’s four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, which are equipped with Trident nuclear weapons.

“The security of the nuclear deterrent is our highest priority, and we have robust processes in place to protect our people and capabilities,” said a Royal Navy spokesperson. “We will not comment on individual cases.”

Reid voluntarily paused her Labour Party membership while an internal inquiry took place, now representing the House of Commons as an independent. Her husband, David Taylor, was among three political advisers released on bail last month after being accused of aiding a foreign intelligence service.

BBC News has sought Reid’s response to the allegations. The investigation into the relationship between the officer and the MP appears unrelated to the husband’s arrest, according to current understanding.
