Ex-Virginia deputy governor kills wife and himself in murder-suicide, police say

Justin Fairfax, a former lieutenant governor of Virginia, and his wife were discovered deceased at their Annandale residence on Thursday, according to local law enforcement. The incident, described as a murder-suicide, occurred shortly after midnight, with investigators indicating Fairfax shot his spouse multiple times before turning the weapon on himself. Both of their teenage children were present in the home during the event.

Investigation and Domestic Context

County Police Chief Kevin Davis reported that the tragedy stemmed from marital tensions, though the probe is still active. “This has been an ongoing domestic dispute linked to a complex or troubled divorce,” Davis stated during an early Thursday briefing. Authorities received a call from Fairfax’s son, who initially believed his mother had been stabbed. Bullet casings near her body suggested a quick sequence of events, with no signs of a drawn-out conflict.

“I think it all kind of happened at once,” Davis added. “There wasn’t a pause … it all happened pretty spontaneously.”

While the couple had been cohabiting, they were reportedly separated. Davis emphasized the emotional weight of the incident, noting, “This is certainly a fall from grace for a high-profile family that seemed to have a lot of things going for them. Tragic for the children to lose both parents. Extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred.”

Political Reactions and Background

Political figures have expressed deep shock over the deaths, offering condolences to the family. Former governor Ralph Northam released a statement, saying, “Pam and I are devastated by this heartbreaking news. I had the privilege of getting to know the Fairfaxes while our families served together.”

“Tragic for the children to lose both parents. Extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred,” Northam noted.

Before this incident, Fairfax had campaigned for the Virginia governorship in 2021 but was eliminated in the primary election. His career was previously marked by two sexual assault allegations, which he contested. The case now raises questions about the personal struggles of a public figure who had once held a prominent state position.
