A sea of people gathered in Gaza for a landmark event, where 300 couples celebrated their nuptials simultaneously, marking the region’s largest collective wedding to date. The ceremony in Deir al-Balah was organized after a random selection of nearly 2,000 applicants, offering a rare moment of joy to families affected by ongoing conflict.

The weddings were supported by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, as part of the UAE’s Operation Gallant Knight 3. This initiative aims to provide relief to Palestinians in Gaza amid the prolonged humanitarian crisis. One bride, Thekra al-Masri, shared with the BBC that the celebration symbolized “hope for change” in the lives of displaced communities.

“This event is a beacon of hope for change,” said Thekra al-Masri, reflecting on the emotional significance of the gathering.

Though a ceasefire has held in Gaza since October 2023, it remains tenuous. The conflict began with a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and 251 captives taken. Israel’s subsequent military operation has claimed more than 72,560 lives, according to Gaza’s health ministry. On 23 April, two Israeli strikes killed at least eight Palestinians, including three children, in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, in Hasakah, Syria, a burning fuel tanker carved a path of fire through the city center, captured by eyewitnesses.
