Missing 5-year-old Australian girl believed to be abducted, say police

Abduction Suspected in Disappearance of 5-Year-Old Australian Girl, Police Report

Authorities in Australia are investigating the possible abduction of a 5-year-old girl missing in The Outback, with Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Mark Grieve confirming the search for a 47-year-old man recently released from prison. The child, identified as Sharon, was last spotted on Saturday evening at her family’s residence in an Aboriginal town camp near Alice Springs, shortly before midnight.

Suspect in Focus

Police believe Jefferson Lewis, who was staying at the camp, disappeared around the same time as Sharon. Grieve emphasized the urgency of the case, stating that investigators are seeking Lewis for further questioning. “With over 24 hours elapsed, the situation has become my worst nightmare as a parent,” he said, highlighting the emotional weight of the investigation.

“Obviously it’s a terrible situation to have such a young child go missing,” Grieve added. “We’re over 24 hours now so it’d certainly be my worst nightmare as a parent.”

Search Efforts Intensify

Search teams have been deployed across the surrounding bush and desert, aided by a dog squad, drone unit, and helicopter. Sharon was last seen wearing a dark blue T-shirt with white rings on the neck and sleeves, along with black boxer-style underwear, according to police details. Lewis, known for domestic and family violence-related offenses, remains one of the few individuals present at the camp during the incident who has not yet been located.

Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward, as the search continues for answers. The goal remains to recover Sharon safely and return her to her family, Grieve reiterated, underscoring the priority of the operation. The Aboriginal town camp, a designated area for Indigenous residents in Alice Springs, has become the central focus of the investigation.
