Nebraska police fatally shoot woman who seized child from Walmart
On Tuesday, a 31-year-old woman was shot dead by officers outside a Walmart in Nebraska after she snatched a three-year-old boy during a chaotic confrontation, authorities confirmed. The incident unfolded when she brandished a knife and forced the child from the store, according to police reports.
Body camera footage revealed the woman slashing the boy’s cheek before refusing to surrender the weapon. Two officers intervened, leading to her fatal shooting at the scene. The child was hospitalized with minor injuries, though no life-threatening harm was reported.
“What if it could have gone a different way?” pondered Sara Hillman, the boy’s mother, speaking to the BBC’s US partner CBS. Her husband, Casey Hillman, urged vigilance: “Parents should hold their children tight, because you never know how it can turn out.” He added, “Pay attention to what’s happening around you.”
The boy, who typically enjoys outdoor activities, became fearful of leaving home the following day, the family shared. Police noted the suspect had a documented history of mental health issues, including schizophrenia.
Earlier in 2024, a woman with the same name was arrested for attempting to set fire to a residence and stabbing her father. She later allegedly breached a Catholic church, wielding a knife to damage property while a priest locked himself in a room. A court found her not responsible due to insanity, citing her mental health condition.
