No evidence Epsom rape took place as reported, say police

Authorities in Epsom have confirmed they have not uncovered conclusive proof that the alleged rape occurred as initially described. The incident, reportedly involving multiple men, was said to have happened in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, near the Epsom Methodist Church in Surrey. The woman, in her 20s, was allegedly followed from a nightclub before the attack took place.

Public concern over the event led to protests in the town centre, with riot police present as demonstrators called for more details about the suspects. Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Grahame clarified that there is “no evidence linking asylum seekers or immigrants to the alleged assault.” She emphasized the limited information available, stating that descriptions of suspects have not been released yet.

“There has been much speculation about the non-release of suspect details, especially regarding their ethnicity,” said Grahame. “No descriptions have been released as the information about the incident and potential suspects is so limited.”

Speculation about the identities of the perpetrators was evident on live social media streams during the protests. Grahame acknowledged the community’s frustration, noting that the situation had sparked strong feelings. “I am aware of the strength of feeling this has created, and the frustration caused by our limited public comment,” she added.

A Surrey Police spokesperson noted that the force has analyzed extensive CCTV footage and conducted forensic investigations as well as house-to-house inquiries. Ongoing efforts continue, with police still seeking witnesses to aid their case. The alleged victim remains supported by authorities, according to the force.

Additional patrols are being deployed in Epsom throughout the weekend to address the situation. On Thursday, community members gathered at the Methodist Church for a service in response to the reported attack. Follow BBC Surrey on Facebook, X, and Instagram for updates.
