SantaCon organiser charged with stealing $1m from charity pub crawl

SantaCon, an annual festive event in New York City where thousands of participants dress as Santa Claus and other holiday figures, has faced allegations of financial misconduct. Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York accuse Stefan Pildes, 50, of diverting over $1 million raised through the charity event for personal use.

“Stefan Pildes framed SantaCon as a charitable initiative, but instead of channeling the millions of dollars collected, he orchestrated a personal gain scheme,” stated US Attorney Jay Clayton in a press release.

Pildes’ legal representative remains unnamed in the court filings. The SantaCon event features a ticketed pub-crawl format, attracting approximately 25,000 attendees annually, as detailed in the legal documents against him.

Based in New Jersey, Pildes marketed SantaCon as a fundraising activity. However, prosecutors claim that of the $2.7 million (£1.989 million) gathered, more than half was siphoned into a personal account for his ventures, including concert tickets, fine dining, luxury travel, and home improvements.

The legal documents list specific expenditures: $365,000 on a lakefront property renovation, $124,000 for a Manhattan apartment, and nearly $3,000 for a birthday celebration at a Michelin-starred establishment. A minimal portion of the total funds went to the stated charity purpose.

Legal authorities assert that Pildes defrauded tens of thousands of participants and local businesses from 2019 to April 2026. He now faces a single wire fraud charge, which could result in up to 20 years in prison.
