Ukraine’s military to get biggest-ever shipment of UK drones
UK Sends Record Drone Supply to Ukraine Amid Escalating Conflict
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed a major arms delivery, with 120,000 drones set to reach Ukraine. This marks the largest single shipment of its type in the UK’s history. The drones, including long-range strike models, reconnaissance units, logistics systems, and maritime-capable variants, will bolster Ukraine’s capabilities as the war enters its fifth year.
Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the strategic timing of the deployment. “Putin seeks to divert attention to the Middle East,” he stated, adding that the move aims to support Ukraine’s resilience. The UK will co-host a Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Berlin, alongside NATO Secretary General Rutte and Ukrainian and German military officials. This event follows recent remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who claimed a Russian outpost was seized using drones alone—a first in the conflict.
“Ukrainians continue to fight with huge courage and nothing will distract us from continuing to stand with them for as long as it takes to secure peace,” Healey said in a statement.
Peace Talks Face New Setbacks
Peace negotiations, mediated by the U.S., have stalled since Donald Trump redirected focus to the Middle East. Zelensky accused U.S. diplomats of neglecting Ukraine’s needs, as reported by AFP. Meanwhile, Russia launched fresh attacks after the Easter ceasefire expired. In northern Sumy, three strikes targeted an industrial area during rescue operations. The south of Odesa also suffered, with fires erupting near its port.
Kyiv’s priority remains a comprehensive ceasefire, a proposal repeated in peace discussions. Moscow, however, demands the peace agreement first, leading to Kyiv’s criticism that Russia lacks commitment to ending the war. Additional UK support measures, including financial aid, are set to be announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves at a finance ministers’ meeting in Washington DC.
