Anderson inspires Lancs to dramatic win over Derbys

Rothesay County Championship, Division Two – Emirates Old Trafford (day four)

Lancashire claimed a thrilling 29-run victory over Derbyshire on the final day of their County Championship encounter at Emirates Old Trafford. The team’s skipper, James Anderson, delivered a double-wicket maiden to spark the decisive push, despite Derbyshire’s efforts to close the gap.

Derbyshire’s second innings began with a stunning start as Ben Aitchison took two wickets in the opening over, dismissing Paul Coughlin and Tom Bailey. Coughlin, unable to respond to an astute delivery, was caught behind without adding to his overnight score of 47. Bailey, meanwhile, misjudged a defensive stroke and lost his off stump to Aitchison’s third ball of the day.

The visitors’ chase of 138 faltered as Mitch Stanley dominated the strike, limiting Marcus Harris to just six balls in the first six overs. Stanley’s dismissal lbw to Muhammad Abbas for five, followed by Harris’s catch behind for 66 off Aitchison, left Derbyshire in disarray. By lunch, the hosts had reduced the opposition to 39-3, with Coughlin’s 3-38 continuing his impressive Lancashire debut.

After the break, Harry Came’s 30-run contribution kept Derbyshire at 52-3, still 86 runs short of their target. However, the tide turned swiftly as Anderson capitalised on the uncertainty, taking two wickets in an over to bring the visitors to 77-6. Martin Andersson’s loose outside edge to Jones at first slip and Anuj Dal’s lbw dismissal for a third-ball duck further tilted the balance in Lancashire’s favor.

With 47 runs remaining, Luis Reece’s leg before wicket to Mitch Stanley ensured the hosts were strong favorites. Aitchison’s late burst, including three boundaries in 10 balls, saw him fall lbw to Anderson, who also had Shoaib Bashir caught at slip by Harry Singh for two. The final blow came when a chaotic mix-up between Abbas and Zak Chappell led to the latter’s run-out for five, sealing Lancashire’s triumph.

Lancashire 351 & 160: Harris 66; Chappell 3-47. Derbyshire 374 & 108: Came 30; Anderson 4-18. Lancashire (21 pts) beat Derbyshire (6 pts) by 29 runs.
