Tragic accident in Salzburg

Alex Manninger, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, has passed away at the age of 48 following a collision between his vehicle and a train. The incident occurred at approximately 08:20 local time (07:20 BST) at a level crossing in Salzburg, according to local police.

Club and international career

Manninger played 64 matches for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, earning a Premier League title and FA Cup victory. Representing Austria, he earned 33 international caps and participated in the Euro 2008 tournament in his home country.

“Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch,” stated Peter Schottel, the Austrian Football Association’s sporting director. “His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team. His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable.”

Professional journey across Europe

Beginning his career with Red Bull Salzburg, Manninger moved to 14 clubs throughout Europe, including Siena, Juventus, Udinese, and Augsburg. He later signed a short-term contract with Liverpool at the age of 39 in 2016 but did not make an appearance.

Contributions to Arsenal’s success

During his tenure at Arsenal, Manninger often played behind David Seaman, but he stepped in for the injured England keeper in the 1997-98 season. His performances were pivotal during a dramatic FA Cup semi-final against West Ham, where Arsenal won on penalties. He also delivered a standout display in a memorable encounter against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Manninger was honored as Premier League Player of the Month in March 1998.
