Fitzpatrick beats Scheffler in Heritage play-off
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick secured victory at the RBC Heritage with a decisive play-off performance against world number one Scottie Scheffler. The 31-year-old carded a bogey five on the 18th hole, which could have ended his title chances, but swiftly rebounded with a birdie to clinch the win. Fitzpatrick’s triumph marks his second PGA Tour title within a month, following a prior victory at the Valspar Championship.
Entering the final round of the RBC Heritage with a three-shot lead, Fitzpatrick aimed to build on his March success. The former US Open champion navigated the first 17 holes without a single mistake, maintaining two under par. However, Scheffler, the American contender, narrowed the gap to one shot by the time they reached the final tee. Both players struggled to find the green on the 18th, but Scheffler managed par after a successful recovery, while Fitzpatrick’s error on the chip led to a first bogey of the day.
Fitzpatrick’s strong form persisted, with his recent performance including a second-place finish at the Players Championship. This win extends his winning streak, while Scheffler, 29, continues his bid for top honors, having previously fallen short at the Masters. South Korean player Si-woo Kim rounded out the top three with a final-round score of 68, finishing at 16 under par, two shots behind the champions.
