GB’s Cairess out of London Marathon with injury

Emile Cairess, currently ranked third in the UK’s marathon history, has been excluded from the 2026 London Marathon due to a calf injury. The 28-year-old, who previously set a second-fastest time in Valencia in December, was anticipated to attempt Sir Mo Farah’s British record of 2:05:11.

Cairess had finished third in 2024 but missed the 2025 race in London after an ankle tendon issue. His recent calf problems have disrupted training, forcing him to withdraw from this year’s event. “I am gutted to be withdrawing from the 2026 London Marathon,” he stated. “After missing the 2025 race, I was thrilled at the chance to return this year, but I only want to compete if I’m fully prepared. The calf injury I’ve been dealing with during my training has forced me to withdraw. I hope to be back next year and wish all participants the best of luck.”

Training Challenges and Record Ambitions

In January, Cairess noted that he has felt capable of surpassing Farah’s mark for the past two years. His marathon personal best stands at two hours six minutes and 46 seconds. However, the calf injury has prevented him from reaching peak condition for the upcoming race.

World champion Peres Jepchirchir has also withdrawn from the women’s race following a stress fracture affecting her build-up. The 2026 London Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, 26 April.
