Rosenior sacked by Chelsea after three months in charge
Chelsea’s head coach Liam Rosenior has been dismissed following a brief tenure of less than four months. The decision came after a string of underwhelming results, including a 3-0 loss to Brighton that extended the club’s scoreless league streak to five consecutive matches—a historic slump since November 1912.
Rosenior, who joined the Blues from French side Strasbourg under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, secured 11 victories in 23 games across all competitions. However, the 2-1 defeat at Brighton marked a turning point, with the team’s lack of goals and poor performance drawing sharp criticism from fans. After the match, Rosenior called the display “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” citing the travel support’s discontent during the game.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season. This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Chelsea’s relegation threat intensified as they dropped to seventh in the Premier League, trailing Liverpool by seven points. Potential successors include Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, and former Dortmund boss Edin Terzic. Iraola, 43, is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Silva’s contract with Fulham expires in July. Terzic, previously linked to Tottenham, was also considered for that role earlier this year.
Calum McFarlane, Rosenior’s assistant, will step in as interim manager. His first match in charge is against Leeds at Wembley, aiming to secure a spot in the FA Cup final. McFarlane previously led Chelsea to a draw against Manchester City and a loss to Fulham in January after Enzo Maresca was replaced.
Further statistical insights reveal Chelsea’s struggles: their xG in the first half against Brighton (0.04) was the lowest under Rosenior, outperforming Enzo Maresca’s records. The team has not kept a clean sheet in 12 straight league games, a rare occurrence in the Premier League. Additionally, Chelsea conceded 11 goals from corners, matching the 1994-95 campaign for the joint-highest tally in the competition.
