Season has been big learning experience – Trafford
Learning Curve for Trafford as Manchester City Chase Treble
James Trafford, the 23-year-old goalkeeper, has described this season as a “valuable learning curve” despite his transfer to Manchester City not yielding the ideal results. After rejoining the club from Burnley in the summer, Trafford initially started as the first-choice keeper in the opening Premier League matches. However, his role shifted following Pep Guardiola’s acquisition of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain on deadline day in September.
From Burnley to Etihad: A Season of Adjustments
City had the chance to retain Trafford in 2023 when a rival club made an offer, which was accepted. Yet, the player opted to return to the Etihad Stadium. “The season has been very inconsistent because I haven’t had much playing time,” Trafford shared with BBC Sport. “Everyone assumes decisions are made for the best, but it hasn’t been the case. Still, I focused on daily improvement and maintaining positivity.”
“Everyone enjoys the bigger games, the tougher ones. But if we lost them, I might have a different perspective. In cups, you must win, or there’s nothing left for me.”
Despite playing second fiddle for most of the campaign, Trafford earned his England debut in a recent friendly against Uruguay. This marks a crucial period for international players as they aim to secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup squad. “I want to be in the squad. It’s a big opportunity, but I can only do my best in the games I have left,” he added.
Clarets’ Influence and Cup Success
Even though Trafford spent time with Burnley last season, his current role at City has been pivotal. He contributed to their Carabao Cup victory, maintaining a shutout against Arsenal in the final. Additionally, he is expected to start in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Southampton after a notable penalty save against Liverpool in the previous round.
“It’s a new experience for me being involved in cup games. The club and season have pushed us as far as possible in these competitions.”
Previously, Trafford’s standout moment came in the 2023 Under-21 European Championship final, where he saved a last-minute penalty to help England secure a historic win. Last year, he achieved 29 clean sheets in 45 matches, aiding Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League and earning the Championship Player of the Year award.
City’s Momentum and Trafford’s Ambitions
Manchester City’s recent 1-0 win over Burnley has propelled them to the top of the league table, a position they haven’t held since the season’s start. With the Carabao Cup already secured, the team remains on track to complete a second domestic treble under Guardiola. “Our goal is to win every game. It’s challenging, but we believe in ourselves,” Trafford remarked.
While the spotlight is on City’s title aspirations, Trafford’s journey has also highlighted his adaptability. The Europa League semi-finalists Aston Villa have reportedly shown interest in signing him this summer, signaling his potential as a sought-after talent in the transfer market.
