Canada: Carney secures majority after special election

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party achieved a parliamentary majority following two by-election victories in Toronto, granting the party the power to advance legislation without opposition assistance. The wins in the districts of University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest bolstered the Liberal’s standing, resulting in 173 seats within the 343-member House of Commons.

Carney, who assumed the role of Prime Minister last year after replacing Justin Trudeau, has built his political career on reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States. His administration has seen five opposition legislators switch parties in recent months, strengthening his position. The special election also marked a shift in public sentiment, as recent Nanos polling indicated over half of Canadians now prefer Carney over Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

“Tonight, voters have placed their trust in our new government’s plan. We accept that support with humility, determination, and a clear understanding of what this moment demands,” Carney stated on X.

Results from a third Quebec race remained pending, leaving the final seat count uncertain. Carney’s leadership has been shaped by public anger over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats to annex Canada as its 51st state. His efforts to align middle-power nations have earned praise, with analysts noting his strong position in governance.

Andrew McDougall, a Canadian politics professor at the University of Toronto, remarked, “Carney has done a fairly good job showing Canadians he can handle Trump.” The Liberal Party’s recent gains position them to remain in power until the 2029 national elections, with Carney’s strategy of legislative independence gaining momentum.
