India news: Record turnout in Bengal, Tamil Nadu polls

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu achieved unprecedented voter participation in their state elections, surpassing previous records. This surge is attributed to updates in electoral rolls following a contentious revision process.

Tamil Nadu sees historic voting participation

Following the completion of polling in all 234 Assembly constituencies, Tamil Nadu reported a voter turnout exceeding 84%. The state maintained a largely calm atmosphere during the voting process. This marks the highest turnout in an Assembly election for Tamil Nadu since 1952.

West Bengal records unprecedented voter engagement

Phase 1 of West Bengal’s Assembly polls concluded with a turnout of 92.25%, the highest in the state’s electoral history. Over 9 million voters were removed from the rolls during the Special Intensive Revision exercise, which spanned several months. Murshidabad district, however, achieved an exceptional 93.55% turnout in the first round.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) attributed Tamil Nadu’s elevated voter participation to adjustments in the electorate’s total count, which resulted from the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
