Ex-parliamentary employee arrested under anti-hacking law

Ex-Parliamentary Employee Charged Under Computer Misuse Act

A 40-year-old former employee of Parliament has been detained by counter-terrorism officers, prompting an inquiry into alleged digital breaches. The arrest took place on Thursday at a location in Coventry, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. The individual is currently held on bail until July, pending further developments in the case.

Legal Framework and Allegations

The man was charged under the Computer Misuse Act of 1990, which aims to prevent unauthorized access to computer systems and data. The police have not disclosed specific details about the incident, stating that the investigation is still active. The allegations are tied to his time working within the parliamentary establishment.

“The police investigation is ongoing. As you know, we do not discuss the details of such issues on the floor of the House,” said Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle during a Monday session. He added, “This is an ongoing criminal investigation. I do not intend to take any further point of order on this matter. I will update members when I’m in a position to share more information.”

A parliamentary representative noted that while the agency is aware of the charge under the 1990 Act, they are withholding additional comments due to the active nature of the inquiry. The spokesperson emphasized, “The safety and security of everyone who works in or visits Parliament is our priority.”
