Man faces attempted murder charges in attack on home of OpenAI’s Sam Altman
Texas Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Attack on OpenAI’s Sam Altman Home
A 20-year-old Texan man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, is accused of hurling a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. He is set to appear in court on Tuesday for state charges, including two counts of attempted murder. Concurrently, federal prosecutors have added charges of firearm possession and property damage via explosives to his case.
Documents and Allegations
The U.S. justice department claims Moreno-Gama was found with materials criticizing artificial intelligence and advocating violence against AI leaders and stakeholders. These documents, labeled “Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction,” reportedly argue that “if I am going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message.” They also list names and addresses of executives and investors at various AI firms.
“Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “These alleged actions – which damaged property and could well have taken lives – will be aggressively prosecuted.”
Federal authorities allege that Moreno-Gama ignited a fire at an exterior gate of Altman’s home around 4:00 local time on Friday. He then fled on foot before attempting to set fire to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters, which hosts ChatGPT, an hour later. Security personnel noted he tried to use a chair to strike the building’s glass doors.
Surveillance and Impact
Court records include surveillance images capturing Moreno-Gama at both locations. The incidents resulted in no injuries, a detail emphasized by San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins during a Monday press conference. “I’m grateful that Mr Altman, his family, and his employees were uninjured in these attacks and are safe,” she stated.
Earlier Monday, the FBI executed a Texas raid linked to the incident, as shared by Director Kash Patel on X. The case has also drawn attention to Altman’s recent scrutiny in The New Yorker, which questioned his leadership in the development of contentious AI technology. Following the attack, Altman referenced the article, saying “we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally.” He later revised his stance after social media backlash.
AI’s Growth and Investor Skepticism
OpenAI’s 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked widespread consumer enthusiasm for AI chatbots. This surge has led to significant financial backing, raising doubts among some investors and observers. The company’s ongoing influence highlights the intense debate surrounding AI’s societal impact.
