PM’s ex-chief of staff says he doesn’t recognise claims about his behaviour
PM’s Ex-Chief of Staff Dismisses Media Portrayal of His Actions
Public Remarks at Kyiv Security Forum Spark Controversy
Morgan McSweeney, former chief of staff to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, addressed media claims about his conduct during his tenure at the Kyiv Security Forum. He described the reports as unfamiliar, remarking, “I don’t recognise that description of me.” The event marked his first public comments on leaving No 10, tied to the decision to appoint Lord Mandelson as U.S. ambassador.
“I find it strange reading about a character with the same name as mine sometimes, but yeah I don’t recognise that character.”
Regret Over Advising Mandelson’s Appointment
McSweeney expressed regret for his role in recommending Lord Mandelson’s appointment but avoided detailed explanations ahead of his testimony before the Foreign Affairs Committee. The committee is set to question him about whether he pressured civil servants to expedite the vetting process for the ambassador.
Vetting Concerns and Political Backlash
Lord Mandelson received security clearance despite concerns raised by vetting officials. Sir Olly Robbins, a former senior Foreign Office civil servant, recently criticized Downing Street for a “dismissive” approach to the vetting process, a claim the prime minister’s office has rejected. McSweeney’s resignation in February highlighted his accountability for the advice he gave, though he clarified he did not oversee the vetting itself.
“But that’s all I can take responsibility for – the role that I played. I think it’s right to take responsibility when you get the call wrong.”
From Party Leader to Controversial Figure
Before his departure, McSweeney became a focal point for criticism against the prime minister’s office. Many Labour MPs demanded his resignation as a condition for supporting Starmer. His name was frequently associated with perceptions of a “boys’ club” in Downing Street, yet party members viewed him as a key strategist in Starmer’s ascent to leadership and prime minister.
Epstein Connection and Aftermath
Lord Mandelson was dismissed by Sir Keir in September 2023 after new evidence emerged about his deep ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. McSweeney’s comments at the forum underscored his stance on the matter, balancing his acknowledgment of responsibility with a sense of bewilderment at the media’s portrayal.
