Student accused of murder over housemate stabbing
Student Accused of Murder Following Housemate Stabbing
A 23-year-old university student is facing murder charges after a fatal stabbing incident involving his housemate. Zack Coughlan was arrested on Sunday and charged with the death of Jamie Collins, a 21-year-old student, who was found dead from multiple injuries.
Emergency personnel located the victim in the rear garden of a shared residence on Cleve Road, Filton, in North Bristol. The discovery occurred during the early hours of 9 April, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Coughlan appeared in Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he provided only his name, birthdate, and address. The court rejected his bail application and ordered him held in custody for a hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday.
Police identified the suspect through CCTV recordings, forensic data, and a comprehensive examination of the area. They noted that the victim had likely perished several hours before the body was found.
“Our thoughts are with Jamie’s family during this challenging period,” said Det Ch Insp Lucy Edgeworth. “Specially trained officers are supporting them and keeping them informed about the ongoing investigation. We ask the public to respect their privacy at this time.”
Edgeworth added: “Those who knew Jamie will be deeply affected by the news. Neighborhood officers have increased patrols in the area and are collaborating with university staff to provide assistance to affected individuals. Further inquiries will take place near Cleve Road in the coming days. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we progress with the investigation.”
