Storm Impact and Recovery Efforts

Severe winds swept across the Midwest, causing significant damage. Roofs were torn from homes, and roads became blocked. Although no fatalities were recorded during Friday’s storm, authorities warned of prolonged recovery periods in remote areas. In Wisconsin, some homes sustained damage, with residents taking shelter in basements. At least 30 residences in Minnesota were affected.

Canadian Military Engagement

The BBC joined the Canadian military in their northernmost region, learning about methods to handle extreme weather. Following their 10-day mission, the crew held their first press conference after returning to land. During the final stage of a notable journey, the BBC traveled with the Rangers as they established a presence in Canada’s remote north.

Artemis II Mission Highlights

During a first formal visit, the Canadian prime minister joined the Finnish president at an ice rink with the Ottawa Charge team. Four astronauts completed a nine-day lunar orbit mission, surpassing previous records for distance from Earth. The Artemis II crew concluded their 10-day trip back to Earth. A highly active volcano has been erupting intermittently since December 2024. The Orion spacecraft is set to return the Artemis II astronauts to Earth on 10 April, with a planned splashdown off San Diego’s coast.

Volcanic Activity and Additional News

After reestablishing communication, astronaut Christina Koch remarked,

“It is so great to hear from Earth again.”

The crew surpassed the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles (400,171km) set in 1970, continuing their journey beyond that distance. Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman’s wife passed away from cancer in 2020 at 46. In Tampa, a homeowner discovered a nine-foot alligator in his pool area, prompting police to assist in its removal.

Jeremy Hansen, Canada’s first astronaut to venture into deep space, was contacted by the prime minister during the mission. BBC Science Editor Rebecca Morelle interviewed the Artemis II crew prior to their scheduled landing on Saturday.
