Advantage Man City? ‘Queen bee’ Guardiola leads them to the top
Burnley’s relegation was sealed after Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory at Turf Moor, sending the Premier League title race into a new phase. The win marked City’s return to the summit of the table for the first time in eight months, following a period where Arsenal had held the lead. However, the Gunners’ dominance was short-lived, as their nine-point advantage over City vanished in just 11 days. A surprising home defeat to Bournemouth on 11 April allowed City to capitalize with three consecutive wins, including a decisive 2-1 triumph over Arsenal on Sunday.
Despite the top spot, City may reflect on their lack of precision in scoring. The solitary goal from Erling Haaland in the opening five minutes, while enough to secure three points, left them trailing in goal difference compared to Arsenal. Pep Guardiola acknowledged the missed opportunities, stating: “We had chances. Not for what is going to happen in the future but to win the game. It was clear, Dubravka was good, but the last part of shooting was sometimes fatigue. If we had scored 2-0, we would have been more relaxed and composed in the final third.”
“We played a really good game. Unfortunately we missed a lot of chances. We defended better in the second half and had less problems,” Guardiola added. “I was not frustrated, why would I be? We won three points, we are top of the league. Of course we can do better, but the guys did everything.”
Can relegated Burnley stop yo-yo effect – and do they want to?
If both Manchester City and Arsenal win all their remaining five fixtures, they will finish with 85 points, forcing a tiebreaker on goal difference or goals scored. Currently, the teams share identical records: 21 wins, seven draws, and five losses in 33 games. The only distinction is City’s tally of 66 goals versus Arsenal’s 63. This narrow margin could shift dramatically if Arsenal secure victories against Newcastle and Fulham in the coming weeks.
City’s past encounters with Burnley highlight their potential dominance. The club has previously scored five or more goals against the relegated side in five separate Premier League matches. Yet, this latest win came with just one goal, despite City’s 65% possession and 28 shots, including an expected goals (xG) total of 3.54. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville noted on Sky Sports: “Arsenal players and fans will wonder if City can maintain this performance against tougher teams. They might stumble if the pressure isn’t sustained.”
Former Premier League goalkeeper Tim Krul added: “Arsenal have been so close the last few years. I think we all half want to see them finally claim the title. This 1-0 result might be the push they need to turn their fortunes around.” With the league title now in a precarious balance, the next few weeks will decide whether City’s recent form is a fluke or a sign of sustained dominance.
