Brady steps down as West Ham vice-chair

Brady Resigns from West Ham Vice-Chair Role After 16 Years

Baroness Karren Brady has resigned from her position as vice-chair of West Ham United, marking the end of a 16-year tenure at the Premier League club. Brady, who was appointed in January 2010 by then joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold, announced her departure on 15 April. She revealed her decision to leave in mid-February, after initially contemplating it in January.

“It has been a privilege to work alongside the board, management, players, staff and supporters at West Ham United. Together we have achieved remarkable milestones, but the highlight for me will always be lifting the Uefa Europa Conference League trophy—a moment that will stay with me forever. I am deeply grateful for the relationships, challenges and opportunities that have shaped my time at the club,” Brady stated.

Brady played a pivotal role in West Ham’s relocation to the London Stadium in 2016, outmaneuvering Tottenham Hotspur in the process. Her efforts also included facilitating Declan Rice’s £105m transfer to Arsenal. During her leadership, the club secured European triumphs, including reaching the Europa League semi-finals in the 2021-22 season and winning the Europa Conference League in 2022-23—their first major trophy since 1980.

Relegation Risks and Fan Backlash

Despite West Ham’s 14 consecutive Premier League seasons, the team now faces potential relegation to the Championship. With five matches remaining, they trail 18th-place Tottenham by just two points. Some fans have expressed discontent, particularly targeting Brady and co-owner Sullivan, citing on-field struggles and dissatisfaction with the stadium as key concerns.

Joint-chairman Daniel Kretinsky acknowledged the opposition to Brady while praising her impact. “Her contribution to West Ham United’s growth, such as the long-term contract for the London Stadium, shareholders transition and the British record transfer of Declan Rice, has been absolutely essential and not always fully appreciated,” he noted. “Karren is also very highly appreciated in the Premier League leadership community and was an excellent representative of our club there.”

Joint-chairman Sullivan, who previously owned Birmingham City and promoted Brady to managing director in 1993 when she was just 23, described her as an “exceptional leader” and a “key figure in the club’s development.”
