Celtic’s most decorated player Forrest signs on for 18th season

Celtic’s Most Decorated Player Extends Stay for 18th Season

James Forrest, the club’s most decorated player, has agreed to a new contract with Celtic, committing to the team until the conclusion of the next campaign. At 34, the winger has accumulated 26 major honors, including 13 league titles, and has netted 110 goals across 564 matches. His recent performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren, where he made a decisive impact as a substitute, highlights his enduring value.

A Career of Consistency and Triumph

Forrest’s 17-year tenure at Celtic has been marked by a remarkable record. He has scored in every season, a feat that underscores his reliability. His latest goal, a sidefoot finish against Aberdeen in December, was his 110th for the club and came during his 564th appearance. The strike also contributed to a 3-1 win, extending his assist tally to 112.

“I’ve been here my full career and loved every minute of it,” said the Scotland international. “I’ll give my best to the club for however long I’m here. I hope to keep contributing.”

Speaking to the club’s website, Forrest reflected on his journey: “When I do stop, I’ll look back on so many great memories, but I want to make a few more before I finish.”

Managing the Transition and Legacy

Interim manager Martin O’Neill praised Forrest’s resilience and impact. “I really want James to finish his career here,” he stated. “But the key is knowing whether he’s worth an extra year. This season proved he’s been worth it.”

“He’s changed games and done wonderfully well. His contributions as a substitute in recent weeks have been exceptional,” O’Neill added. “Even at his age, his burst of pace is worth its weight in gold.”

Forrest’s role has evolved over the years, with only seven starts this season compared to 11 the previous year. This shift has been influenced by injuries and the arrival of new wingers, such as Sebastian Tounekti and Michel-Ange Balikwisha, who have yet to fully live up to expectations. Despite this, Forrest remains a steadfast presence, having played under seven managers since his debut in 2010.

From Debut to Dominance

Celtic’s journey with Forrest began under Neil Lennon, and he has since become a symbol of longevity. His most productive scoring years came in consecutive treble-winning campaigns, where he netted 17 goals in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. He nearly matched that in 2019-20, scoring 16 times. His recent goals have solidified his status as Celtic’s most decorated player, surpassing Bobby Lennox’s 25 trophies and outpacing current captain Callum McGregor.

Forrest’s career has also seen him earn accolades, including Scottish Football Writers’ and PFA Scotland Player of the Year honors in 2018-19. While the list of wide men who have passed through Celtic over the years is extensive—Marian Shved, Luis Palma, Marco Tilio, Nicolas Kuhn, Liel Abada—Forrest has remained the consistent force, a testament to his adaptability and influence.

His 2010 debut, a 4-0 victory over Motherwell, set the tone for a career defined by composure and creativity. Even as the club’s tactics have changed, Forrest’s ability to deliver under pressure has kept him indispensable. With the 2023-24 season now underway, his 564th appearance marks another chapter in a legacy that shows no signs of waning.
